Cargo Assurance/Specialist (Loss Control)

Main Purpose

This role supports the assurance of cargo quality, quantity accuracy, and compliance across the Far East supply chain. The position focuses on coordinating inspections, overseeing quality control, and managing cargo-related risks to safeguard Trafigura’s commercial interests.

The specialist will regularly attend operational sites — including ports, refineries, terminals, and storage facilities — to monitor critical activities, validate inventories, and ensure operational diligence. Involvement in high-risk operations will require proactive risk assessment and implementation of preventive measures. Regular regional travel is essential to provide on-site supervision and maintain strong partnerships with service providers.

Key Responsibilities

Quality & Quantity Assurance

  • Investigate quality or quantity variances, determine root causes, and apply corrective actions for continuous improvement.

  • Review upcoming operations to identify potential risks and establish appropriate mitigation procedures.

  • Conduct on-site checks at Trafigura’s storage and operational locations to validate inventory integrity and operational compliance.

Risk Management

  • Identify and evaluate potential cargo risks during transport and storage.

  • Develop and execute preventive and contingency strategies to minimize exposure.

  • Build and sustain relationships with inspection firms and surveyors to ensure consistent cargo assurance standards.

Operational Coordination

  • Collaborate closely with traders, logistics, and vessel operations teams.

  • Coordinate activities among vessels, terminals, and storage sites to ensure smooth execution.

  • Ensure adherence to both local regulations and international compliance standards.

  • Support the preparation and verification of operational documentation and certifications.

Reporting & Analysis

  • Produce comprehensive operational and loss reports, highlighting key findings and areas of concern.

  • Track and evaluate KPIs related to cargo performance, losses, and operational efficiency.

  • Recommend and implement process enhancements to improve control and performance.


Required Qualifications

  • 3–5 years of experience in cargo inspection, quality assurance, or commodities trading.

  • Solid understanding of petroleum product specifications and quality standards.

  • Knowledge of international trade terms, logistics, and shipping operations.

  • Strong command of English and local languages.

  • Willingness to travel extensively within the Far East.

  • Ability to operate effectively under pressure and in challenging environments.

Preferred Skills

  • Previous experience with leading inspection firms (e.g., SGS, Intertek, Bureau Veritas, Saybolt).

  • Familiarity with ISO standards and quality management systems.

  • Strong analytical, communication, and negotiation capabilities.

  • Proven problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
